Is There a War Between Social and Economic Conservatives?

Rob [Schwarzwalder], thank you for that kind introduction, for hosting this forum to call attention to the role of social issues in the body politic, and for inviting this proud FRC alumnus to offer a few words.

Any assessment of the relationship between economic and social conservatism would not be complete without a reference to Ronald Reagan. In 1977, less than three weeks after Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as our 39^th president, the former governor of California laid out his vision of a renewed GOP that would advance “a program of action based on political principle that can attract those interested in the so-called ‘social’ issues and those interested in ‘economic’ issues.” Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Reagan made it clear that he was not interested in “a temporary uneasy alliance” between two factions of conservatives, but in “the creation of a new, lasting majority,” and one that is “committed to working always in the interest of the American family.”     [Continued...]

Why the US Should Not Ratify the CRC

In what may be the greatest assault ever on parental rights in America, liberal leaders are pushing for Senate ratification of a United Nations treaty called the Convention on the Rights of the Child, or CRC. If ratified, it would:

• radically encroach on our sovereignty;

• subject us to an independent UN committee of “experts” in Geneva;

• allow the government in all cases to determine what is in a child’s best interest;

• intrude on parents’ rights to teach values and faith; and

• grant to children autonomous rights, which many believe would include access to controversial sexual information and even abortion.
